ToggleWho is Jimmy Swaggart?
Jimmy Lee Swaggart, the son of Willie Leon and Minnie Swaggart, was born March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana. He was the eldest of the dedicated local Assemblies of God members.
His father, a singer and partner, later became a Pentecostal preacher in the Assemblies of God denomination in the 1950s. Jimmy grew up in church culture and was inspired from an early age to work as a minister of the Gospel.
Although initially uninterested in religious topics, 8-year-old Jimmy had a dramatic redemptive experience that expressed his mentality and made him aware of God’s calling. Shortly after this revelation, he began praying and studying the Bible for hours.
Jimmy was also drawn to music from a young age, as both of his parents were talented singers who played the violin and guitar during the era of the Great Depression. He usually snuck out to perform at rhythm clubs with Jerry L. Lewis, his cousin and rock ‘n’ roll pioneer. He became popular with club members.
At the age of 17, he married 15-year-old Frances Anderson, whom he met at Wisner’s church. They had a child named Donnie. They lived in poverty, so he had to take several part-time jobs to support his young family. During this time, he also performed Southern gospel music in various churches.
In 1955, when he was 20, he began working as a full-time evangelist and began holding revival meetings throughout the American South. His breakthrough came in 1960 when he began recording gospel music for Christian radio. A year later he was ordained by the Assemblies of God.
During the 1980s, his show aired weekly on more than 3,000 stations and cable networks. His “crusades” allowed him to travel across the contagious United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and South America. He sold over 17 million LP albums in the 1970s and 1980s. Swaggart sings with a baritone voice and also plays the piano.
