Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. He was the son of John Lewis Nelson, pianist and songwriter, and Mattie Della, jazz singer. Prince attended Bryant Junior High School in Minneapolis and then Central High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He played on Central’s junior varsity basketball team and continued to play basketball for fun as an adult.
He was interested in music from a young age and taught himself to play the piano, guitar and drums.
