Ulrich Alexander Fox, known simply as Rick Fox, was born on July 24, 1969, in Toronto, Canada. He was the son of high jumper and Olympic pentathlete Dianne Gerace and Ulrich Fox. His father is Bahamian and his mother is Canadian of Italian and Scottish descent. Fox and his parents moved to his father’s homeland, the Bahamas, at a young age. He has two sisters, Jeanene Fox and Sarah Fox.
He attended Kingsway Academy in Nassau. While living in Warsaw, Indiana, he played basketball and trained professionally. After two seasons in Warsaw from 1984 to 1986, Fox would have a very successful senior season. He missed out on playing his final season because the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) ruled that he was no longer eligible for high school since he had already completed eight semesters between the Bahamas and Indiana. Although he did not play in any games during his senior season, he was still selected to the Indiana All-Star team in 1987. He then played as a college star at the University of North Carolina, where his professional basketball career began with highlights. He continued to play basketball while in school and had little success. He earned his bachelor’s degree in radio, television, and film from the university.
In 1991, Fox was drafted by the Boston Celtics and was introduced on opening night of the season. He was the first rookie since Larry Bird in 1979. He was also selected for the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 1992. He signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1997 during the 1996-97 season after being released by the Celtics. In his first season with the Lakers, Rick started all 82 games and averaged 12 points per game. Rick averaged 6.7 points, including 11 points in the Lakers’ first victory of the 1999-2000 season.
Rick Fox began acting as a member of the Western University basketball team during his professional NBA career in the 1994 film Blue Chips. In 1998, he played the role of runner Chick Deagan petticoats in the movie He Got Game. As a supporting actor, the Canadian made an appearance in the film “Resurrection”, in which he played Detective Scholfield.
