Ulrich Alexander Fox, known simply as Rick Fox, was born on July 24, 1969, in Toronto, Canada. He was the son of high jumper and Olympic pentathlete Dianne Gerace and Ulrich Fox. His father is Bahamian and his mother is Canadian of Italian and Scottish descent. Fox and his parents moved to his father’s homeland, the Bahamas, at a young age. He attended Kingsway Academy in Nassau. While living in Warsaw, Indiana, he played basketball and trained professionally. After two seasons in Warsaw from 1984 to 1986, Fox would have a very successful senior season. He missed out on playing his final season because the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) ruled that he was no longer eligible for high school since he had already completed eight semesters between the Bahamas and Indiana. Although he did not play in any games during his senior season, he was still selected to the Indiana All-Star team in 1987. He then played as a college star at the University of North Carolina, where his professional basketball career began with highlights. In 1991, Fox was drafted by the Boston Celtics and was introduced on opening night of the season. He was the first rookie since Larry Bird in 1979.
