Who is Tom Petty?

Thomas Earl Petty, known throughout the world as Tom Petty, was the son of Kitty Avery and Earl Petty. He was born on October 20, 1950 in Gainesville, Florida and died on October 2, 2017 at the age of 66. He was an American citizen.

His mother was an employee at the local tax office, while his father was a traveling salesman. Petty grew up with his brother Bruce, seven years younger, in the northeast Gainesville residential district known locally as Duckpond.

Earl, his father, was drunk and talked a lot, which caused him to constantly verbally and physically abuse Tom. At the age of 10, he met Elvis Presley and quickly developed an interest in rock ‘n’ roll. After seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, he knew this was his career path.

At the age of 17, he decided it was time to start playing music, so he dropped out of school to focus on bass with his band Mudcrutch.

Although Petty began as Mudcrutch’s bassist, he quickly became their leader and primary songwriter. The band moved to Los Angeles in 1974, but disbanded the following year after their only single sold poorly. In 1976, bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, along with Ron Blair and Stan Lynch, joined Tom in Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The band’s self-titled album was released in November of that year and featured the singles “Breakdown” and “American Girl”. They went on to release twelve more studio albums and several hit singles, including “Don’t Do Me Like That”, “Refugee”, “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. The band performed at the Super Bowl XLII halftime show in 2008, a performance that ranked No. 12 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of 2020.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ final performance was at the Hollywood Bowl on September 25, 2017, and “American Girl” was the last song they ever performed in concert.
