Keenum was recruited by the University of Houston to play college football for the Cougars. In 2006, he redshirted as a freshman. The following year, Keenum made his collegiate debut in the season opener against Oregon. His final passing stats for the season were 2,259 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In 2008, Keenum did even better, becoming only the second player in school history to rush for more than 5,000 yards in a single season. Additionally, he led the nation in total offense and helped Houston win its first bowl game in nearly three decades. In 2009, Keenum continued his impressive play, leading the Cougars to a 10-4 record. He finished the game with 48 touchdowns and over 5,800 yards of offense.

Keenum was sidelined for the remainder of the 2010 season after injuring his ACL in the third game of the year. He completed the year with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. However, Keenum returned in 2011 after receiving a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA. In October of that year, he set a new NCAA record for touchdown passes with nine. The following month, he set new NCAA passing yardage and completion records.

Despite his tremendous success in college, Keenum went undrafted in 2012. He eventually signed with the Houston Texans and spent his entire inaugural season on the team’s practice squad. In his NFL debut in October 2013 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Keenum threw his first touchdown pass. His season was disappointing, as evidenced by his 0-8 record as a starter.

In 2014, the Texans released Keenum. He was immediately claimed by the St. Louis Rams but was released a few months later. The year ended with Keenum re-signing with the Texans and winning his first two NFL games.
