Although he considered alternatives, he ultimately decided to stay at PSV Eindhoven, prompting the team to enter into contract negotiations with the player.
Dumfries continues to serve as captain of PSV Eindhoven at the start of the 2020–21 season after Roger Schmidt selected him over Pablo Rosario. He contributed to the team’s strong start to the season, which saw them finish first in their first five league matches and qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage.
On 14 August 2021, Dumfries joined Serie A champions Inter Milan for €12.5 million, plus a €2.5 million bonus from PSV Eindhoven. According to Dutch media, his former clubs will receive money as part of the transfer. When he first joined the team, he was assigned the number two jersey.
Dumfries made his first team debut in the second half of Inter Milan’s 4-0 win over Genoa on the opening day of the 2021-2022 Serie A season.
