Jonathan Bryan Toews was born on April 29, 1988 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Toews began playing organized hockey at the age of five, and by age twelve he was already playing in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Toews attended Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, a prep school in Minnesota, where he continued to play hockey and develop his skills. After graduating, he attended the University of North Dakota, where he played on the men’s ice hockey team for two seasons before leaving to play professionally.

Jonathan Toews was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, third overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in October 2007, and during his rookie season he helped the Blackhawks reach the Western Conference Finals.

Toews continued to excel on the ice and was named captain of the Blackhawks during the 2009–10 season at the age of 21, making him one of the youngest captains in NHL history. That season, he helped the team win its first Stanley Cup championship in 49 years and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff’s most valuable player.

Toews continued to be a key player for the Blackhawks over the years, leading the team to two more Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015. He was named to the All-Star team several times.
