The shooting happened during a traffic stop in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. After shooting, Wright drove several blocks before crashing his vehicle into another and hitting a concrete barrier. Daunte Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.
A day later, Brooklyn Center police said in a statement that Potter wanted to use her Taser but instead grabbed her gun and shot Daunte Wright. Two days later, Potter and Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon resigned from their posts.
Potter is a 26-year law enforcement veteran and has worked for the Brooklyn Center Police Department for more than two decades. She joined the Brooklyn Center Police Department in 1995, at the age of 22.
On April 12, 2021, the Hennepin County Coroner released a report classifying the manner of death as homicide and stating that Daunte Wright “died of a gunshot wound to the chest.” The same day, Wright’s family hired civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump to represent them, while Potter is represented by attorney Earl Grey.
After the shooting of Daunte Wright, mourners and protesters gathered near the crime scene to demand justice for Wright.
