Wife of Alexander Ovechkin: Meet Anastasia Shubskaya – As a child, Alexander Ovechkin moved with his family to a high-rise building on the outskirts of Moscow, surrounded by a “dilapidated neighborhood”.
He attended public school 596, known for its military discipline and its “tyrannical” principal, for eight and a half years before enrolling at Dynamo Moscow’s sports school.
While his friends were high and dying, Ovechkin attended morning and evening practices.
When his parents could no longer transport young Alex to hockey games, his older brother Sergei stepped in and made sure his younger brother got where he needed to go.
When Ovechkin was 10 years old, his brother Sergei died from a blood clot in a car accident. The next day, Ovechkin attended a youth hockey game that his parents insisted he play in.
Ovechkin attributes his interest in hockey to his older brother Sergei, who initiated and encouraged him to pursue the hobby. When Alex scores, he often kisses his glove and points to the sky to greet his brother.
He made a name for himself in Dynamo Moscow’s system by breaking Pavel Bure’s record of 53 goals at the age of 11.
During this time, Ovechkin dreamed of playing in the NHL and kept trading cards of star players, including those of his idol Mario Lemieux, in his bedroom.
Ovechkin joined Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League at the age of 16. (RSL). He made his professional debut in the 2001/02 season and scored four points in 21 games. Before being drafted into the NHL, he played in 152 games over three seasons, scoring 36 goals and 32 assists.
The lockout ended two days after the signing of a new collective agreement. On October 5, 2005, Ovechkin made his debut with the Capitals, scoring two goals in a 3–2 victory against Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire.
On July 27, 2021, Ovechkin signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract extension with the Capitals. On November 26, 2021, he recorded his 28th career hat trick, tied with Marcel Dionne and Bobby Hull for sixth for the most hat tricks in NHL history.
Ovechkin scored his 275th power play goal on December 31, breaking Dave Andreychuk’s record.
On March 16, 2022, Ovechkin scored his 767th career NHL goal, ranking third among all-time NHL goals. He overtook Jaromr Jágr. He achieved this feat in 477 fewer games than Jagr, despite taking 400 more shots on goal.
Ovechkin is widely considered one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history, and some believe he has a real chance of surpassing Wayne Gretzky in career goal totals (894).
He is famous for his deadly one-timer, which he usually shoots from the left faceoff circle, an area known as his “office,” as former teammate Brooks Orpik said.
