Hemmings began uploading cover videos to YouTube in 2011, when he was 14, under the pseudonym “hemmo1996.”
Hemmings’ first video, a cover of Mike Posner’s “Please Don’t Go”, was released on February 3, 2011. Hemmings encouraged Hood and Clifford to participate in his videos as his covers became increasingly popular on the platform.
The current 5 Seconds of Summer lineup came about when the trio finally included their mutual friend Ashton Irwin in their videos. On December 3, 2011, they had their first official show at a tavern in their hometown.
