American business magnate Malcolm Irving Glazer was born on August 15, 1928, in Rochester, New York, United States of America.
Abraham and Hannah Glazer, immigrants born in Lithuania, had seven children together, with Glazer being the fifth. His siblings were Jerome Glazer, Jeanette Goldstein, Marcia Glazer, Rosalind Glazer, Evelyn Glazer, and Dorothea Glazer.
At the age of 8, he began working in his father’s watch parts business. When his father died when he was 15, he sold watches door-to-door to support his family.
Glazer was quoted by Reuters as saying that his father’s death was “perhaps the most painful event that ever happened in my life”, that it “made me a man” and was therefore “good in a way”.
He studied briefly at Sampson College in Romulus, New York, before devoting his life to restoring jewelry and watches. In public life, he was known as “the Goblin”, a short man with a reddish beard.
Malcolm Glazer happens to be the owner of one of the most popular and profitable football teams in the world, Manchester United.
Glazer successively bought out the shareholders of Manchester United between 2003 and 2005 in a £790 million takeover. Many Manchester United fans opposed Glazer’s takeover on financial grounds.
In April 2006, Glazer suffered a stroke and his sons Joel and Avram took over the management of the club. The club was still run by Glazer’s family even after his death in 2014. 90% of the club is owned equally by each of Glazer’s six children.
He served as president and CEO of First Allied Corporation, a holding company for his various business ventures, and was also the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League.
At Sampson Air Force Base, Glazer acquired the watch repair franchise. After the base closed in 1956, he began investing in single-family homes, duplexes and commercial buildings in Rochester. He eventually owned commercial properties across the country.
Catering equipment, food packaging, pantries, marine proteins, broadcasting, health care, real estate, banking, natural gas and oil, the Internet, stocks and bonds were all part from Glazer’s extensive investment portfolio.
He purchased the West Hill Convalescent Center in Hartford, Connecticut, the first of five health care facilities he would eventually run. In 1976, he purchased three television stations, including WRBL in Columbus, Georgia, for $20 million.
He founded First Allied Corporation in 1984 as a holding company for all of its business ventures and served as president and CEO.
When he made an unsuccessful $7.6 billion bid to buy federal freight railroad Conrail in 1984, Glazer first attracted the attention of the nation’s business community.
