Mills Lane attended Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, where he played American football as a linebacker and ice hockey as a goalie. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1956 and was discharged in 1959.

Mills Lane then enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned a degree in business administration in 1963. Mills Lane served as a district court judge in Washoe County, Nevada and a television personality for two mandates.

He was best known for refereeing several major heavyweight boxing matches in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on June 9, 2013 and also into the Boxing Hall of Fame of Nevada on August 10 of the same year.

Mills Lane suffered a stroke in March 2002, which left him partially paralyzed and virtually unable to speak. He died on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at the age of 85, in Reno, Nevada, United States. The cause of his death is not yet known.
