How to participate in Wordle?
Wordle is incredibly easy to use. The goal is to correctly predict the five-letter word in six attempts. After each guess, the letters of the chosen word will be highlighted in green if they are in the correct place, in yellow if they are in the wrong place, or in gray if they do not appear in the word at all.
With these tips, you can start focusing on the right word. Visit the Wordle website to test it for yourself.
How was Wordle created?
Wordle was originally conceived as a simple family game by software engineer Josh Wardle. During the pandemic, he designed the game so that he and his partner could play a fun word game together. They quickly realized that there was something quite special about this basic guessing game. So, after a few tweaks, Wardle published it on his website, Power Language.
The game was released in October 2021 and had two million daily participants by the end of the year. It became a viral sensation largely due to the ease with which participants could share their results on Twitter and other social media platforms without revealing any spoilers. In January 2022, Wardle accepted a seven-figure offer from The New York Times to acquire Wordle. Well done, Mr. Wardle. Great job, indeed.
Are any Wordle terms off-limits?
You can type in almost any five-letter word in English and Wordle will accept it as a guess. The solution, however, is chosen each day from a much narrower range of more frequent five-letter words. Of course, there are still hundreds of alternative answers, but that means the solution will never be something as esoteric as “THIOL,” “CAIRD,” or “MALIC” (yes, those are all real words).
The New York Times will occasionally choose not to publish a word as its Wordle solution of the day, perhaps for reasons related to recent events or politics. For example, just after the announcement of the overturning of Roe v Wade in the United States, the New York Times chose to change the word of the day from “FETUS” to “SHINE” on March 30, as the term “fetus” was deemed too politically inflammatory in light of recent events.
The New York Times has also made a point of never allowing offensive expressions as an answer to a Wordle problem. Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from using even the dirtiest terms as guesses, as long as they’re dictionary-approved words and you understand that they’re never going to be the answer.
Is Wordle getting too easy for you?
If Wordle is getting too easy for you, there are a few things you can do to make the game harder for yourself. The first option is to turn on Hard Mode. You can do this by clicking the gear symbol in the upper-right corner of the Wordle homepage. In Hard Mode, all highlighted letters must be used in all subsequent guesses. This prevents you from using the popular strategy of selecting two words like “OUNCE” and “PAINS” to test all five vowels right from the start.
You can take it a step further by following the “Ultra-Hard” guidelines. This implies that every guess you make could be the correct answer. If you were just playing on hard mode and entered “MOIST” and the “O” turned yellow, there’s nothing stopping you from typing “POLAR” as your next word, even if you already know the “O” is in the wrong place. This is not allowed if you’re following the “Ultra-Hard” rules. You have to follow every clue and make sure that every word you type is potentially the answer.
If Wordle is still too simple for you, you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired games that have appeared online in the last year. Worldle is one of our favorites, in which you have to predict a nation in the globe based on its shape. There’s also Waffle, which requires you to swap letters in a completed grid to complete all the words; Moviedle, which shows you an entire movie in a short time and challenges you to guess the movie in six guesses; and Quordle, which requires you to solve four words at a time with the same guesses.
