Actress and singer Zendaya, Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman, was born on September 1, 1996, in Oakland, California.

When she was six, she and two classmates put on a play there for Black History Month. Her mother worked summers as a house manager at the California Shakespeare Theater adjacent to Orinda, California, where she performed as a child.

She helped seat customers, sold tickets to a charity event, and was motivated to pursue her acting career by seeing theater performances.

At the age of eight, Zendaya was a member of the hip-hop dance group Future Shock Oakland for three years. She also danced hula for the Academy of Hawaiian Arts for two years.

While still studying at the Oakland School for the Arts, Zendaya had various opportunities to act in local theaters.
